2009 Season Review

by Katie Wade

The Saints women’s 2009 season was great overall although it did not end the way we had hoped! During the regular season we won 10 out of 12 games and had a high scoring season with a total of 270 points.  The 2009 team was one of our largest squads yet, although by the end of the season the size of the team was significantly diminished due to injuries, we always played with a strong side and a lot of heart.  The season would not have been successful without the considerable effort, passion and determination of every single team member.  Although we were very successful during the regular season we lost a very close game to the Irish and were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round.  This was a very disappointing loss but not a reflection of a disappointing season.

The 2009 season was our first without a club house and proper fields.  Many players were a bit nervous that this change in facilities might translate into fewer team bonding experiences and a more disorganized season.  Happily that was not the case! The social aspect of the club remained and we had almost as good of a time off the field as on it.  Some of the memorable social events of 2009 include: a great rookie night at the CRU, the Stampede Sevens tournament (which we won and then dressed up as Mexican cowboys), football games, a Stampede party at Cowboys, a team banquet, tail gate parties after practice, kangaroo court, and so much more.  All three Saints teams played at the CRU this year so we were able to watch and support the two men’s teams more than we have been able to in the past.  The Saint’s women were also involved in youth rugby, especially at the high school level.  We had a number of players coach at high schools across Calgary spreading the love of the game to new rugby players.

I would like to thank our two coaches Jon Dalby and John Pepe for taking the time and putting in the effort to coach us, but mostly I would like to thank them for their patience and passion for the game. I would also like to thank the enormous network of former players, friends, and significant others for their help all season and for their continuing support of the team and individual players.  We were also lucky to have the support of a great physio/trainer, Sarah, thank you very much for helping us through our many injuries and putting up with our impatient demands for taping!
